The Changing Landscape of Bachelor's Education

4 More Countries Worth Exploring

As higher education evolves, a new set of study destinations are stepping into the spotlight. Japan, Netherlands, Australia, and Germany are increasingly attracting undergraduate students who value academic quality, global exposure, and career-ready education.

What Makes Them Worth Considering:

Japan: 250+ English-taught programs. The University of Tokyo and Kyoto University sit inside the global Top-50 (QS), and the MEXT scholarship typically covers tuition + approximately ¥117,000/month for undergraduates.

Netherlands: 240+ English-taught bachelor's programs. TU Delft and the University of Amsterdam rank within the global Top-100 (QS), with annual tuition typically €6,000-€15,000 for non-EU students.

Australia: 9 universities in the QS Top-100, plus a Temporary Graduate Visa (subclass 485) offering 2-5 years of post-study work permit after a bachelor's degree.

Germany: Over 1,500 English-taught programs. Public universities charge little to no tuition (€100-400/semester), but may require a one-year Studienkolleg foundation program.

What To Do Now:

As you build your shortlist, consider adding programs from these countries. More options mean a better fit academically, financially, and personally.

You only do your bachelor's once. Four years that shape the next forty. Make them count.

ETS Changes the TOEFL iBT Format

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) announced that from January 2026, the TOEFL iBT exam will move to a new test format. This is a structural and scoring evolution - it has no effect on eligibility or acceptance. The goal: a faster test, quicker scores, and a more accurate measure of academic English skills.

• Adaptive Reading & Listening sections
• Updated task formats
• Revised scoring framework
• Faster score reporting

What Is the Actual Cost of Studying in Germany?

Germany offers high-quality education with low or no tuition fees, but students must budget carefully for living and administrative costs. The cost remains remarkably competitive compared to the US, UK, or Australia.

Key Costs to Plan For:

• Tuition: €0, but €100-400 semester contribution (Semesterbeitrag)
• Living costs: €700 - €1,200/month depending on city
• Health insurance: ~€120 - €150/month
• Blocked Account: €11,208 for a German blocked account (Sperrkonto)

Budget €11,000 - €15,000/year in total. Scholarships (DAAD, Erasmus+) and part-time work (up to 20 hrs/week) can significantly offset costs.

A Common Essay Mistake to Avoid

"I've always loved science..."

✘ Why it doesn't work: Every CS student says this. Generic.

✅ Instead, try: "When [specific moment], I realized [specific problem]. I coded [solution]." Universities want proof, not passion poetry.

Mistakes to Avoid Now (2026/27 Applicants)

1. Delaying SAT: Test scores take 3-4 weeks. Don't wait until March.

2. Weak recommendations: Teachers need 4 weeks. Ask now, specify and provide context.

3. One-size Essay: Customize for each university. Generic SOPs are rejected.
