COVER STORY
The Great Destination Shift - Where Indian Students Are Actually Going in 2026
The study abroad landscape for Indian students has shifted more dramatically in the past 18 months than in the previous decade. If your counselling conversations are still anchored around the US, UK, Canada, and Australia as the default shortlist - this data should change that.
India's Ministry of External Affairs reports that 1.2 million Indian students were enrolled abroad in 2025 - a 5.7% decline from 1.33 million in 2024. This is the first meaningful contraction in Indian outbound mobility in years. Not because students stopped wanting to go, but because the destinations they were going to have made it harder to get in, stay, and work.
| Destination |
Change (2023→2024) |
Key Factor |
Canada |
-41% |
Permit caps + 71% rejection rate |
UK |
-28% |
Dependants ban + Graduate Route cut |
US |
-13% |
F-1 visas down 44% in H1 2025 |
Australia |
-12% |
Higher scrutiny + commencements down |

BUT ALTERNATIVE DESTINATIONS ARE SURGING:
| Destination |
Growth (2022→2024) |
Why |
New Zealand |
+354% |
Safety, work rights, welcoming visa |
Germany |
+68% |
Zero tuition, strong engineering |
Ireland |
+49% |
English-speaking, tech hub, 2yr work |
France |
+33% |
2,000 English programs, 2yr visa |
Sources: India MEA, DAAD, ICEF Monitor
Three forces driving the shift:
1. Visa uncertainty. Students and parents ask: "What if rules change after I arrive?" Canada's 93% permit drop and the US immigration stance have rattled confidence.
2. ROI recalculation. Rupee depreciation = hidden inflation. Students now ask "What salary can I expect?" before they ask about rankings.
3. Better alternatives emerged. NZ, Ireland, and France have improved offerings - stable policies, work rights, and rising global rankings.
|
💡 What to Do This Month
1. Audit your shortlisting framework - are NZ, Ireland, France serious options or afterthoughts?
2. Update cost conversations - factor in rupee depreciation, work probability, and visa stability.
3. More doors are open now than ever, the options have never been better. Your shortlist should reflect that.

🌎 Country Spotlight
Deep-dive · One destination, every angle
THIS MONTH: NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand: The Quiet Contender
New Zealand rarely tops the study abroad conversation in Indian schools. It should. Indian students in NZ grew +354% from 2022 to 2024 (1,600 → 7,300), and overall international numbers rose +24% in 2024 — while other Anglophone destinations contracted.
|
Post-Study Work Visa — Up to 3 Years
Unlike UK (cutting to 18 months) or Australia (tightening), NZ has kept work rights stable and welcoming.
|
|
|
Safety + Quality of Life
Consistently among the world's safest countries. Auckland ranks in the QS top 30 Best Student Cities.
|
|
|
Pathway to Residence
NZ's Skilled Migrant Category visa offers clearer pathways from study → work → residence than most destinations.

✅ Recommend if:
• Values safety + quality of life • Cost-conscious, English-speaking • Engineering, agri, health, enviro • Wants strong work rights • Prefers smaller environment
|
|
|
❌ Not ideal if:
• Wants mega-city experience • Highly specialized niche field • Needs network in US finance / UK law
